When Carphone Warehouse announced its joint venture with U.S. retailer Best Buy earlier this year, many suspected a much more profound rethink of the U.K. company was afoot.

Tuesday's news that Carphone may split its retail and broadband businesses suggests CEO Charles Dunstone wants to develop the Best Buy partnership as a standalone European consumer electronics retailer -- and get out of Internet services for good.
